Education and Safety Committee

Education & Safety Overview

The Education & Safety Committee is chaired by Ken Gillstrom and

Alistair MacKenzie.

The aims of the Education and Safety committee are to promote safe

sailing practices together with conducting programs that allow members

to improve their sailing skills.

The main elements of the programs are:

Safety

Safe sailing leads to fun sailing, and both skippers and crew should be in complete control

of their boat at all times. We try to alert members to safety-related issues, and encourage

members to practice safe sailing techniques. Bulletins on safety issues will be issued on a

regular basis, and should be read by all members.

Crew Overboard Retrieval

This is the skill that you hope never to have to use, but it may one day help you save a life.

We encourage all members to practice Crew Overboard return and retrieval maneuvers

until you can bring your boat back and stop beside a COB within about a minute, and have

the COB back on board within another two minutes. So familiarize yourselves with crew

overboard return and retrieval methods, and practice until you can pass the three-minute

test.

Returning Skipper Seminars

These seminars are mandatory for returning skippers, and are aimed at reminding skippers

of important safety information and practices relating to early-season sailing, where

weather and hypothermia can create serious potential dangers. Check the HSC Calendar or

website for upcoming seminars. Returning members, as well as skippers, are encouraged to

attend.

Mentoring

This is the heart of the educational program. Tuesday and Thursday evening mentoring

allows members wishing to upgrade their sailing skills to work under the guidance of an

experienced club member, and attain the skill levels for passing Skipper A and Skipper B

grades.
