Flotillas provide an opportunity to practice some of the skills you learn about but never get to use.
Weather - It starts before you even step foot on the boat. Packing for a weekend on a boat is a little different than packing for a weekend at a hotel. Weather plays a big part in what you need to bring with you, what you will be able to do when you get there and even sometimes where you will stay (tied up to a dock or swinging free on your anchor).
Destination – What amenities are provided where you are going? Can you walk into town to get supplies or dine out – or do you need to bring everything you need with you? (Do I buy my wine before I leave or after I get there?)
Navigation – If you’ve done Coastal Navigation, it’s nice to get a chance to actually use some of the skills you’ve learned – if you haven’t – it’s a good opportunity to be introduced to the pleasures of navigation. Matching a two dimensional chart to the 3D view of what you're approaching can be quite an experience. Entering a harbour and docking is easy when it’s familiar territory but can be a little trickier when it’s a place you’ve never been.
Live-Aboard – You know what a “head” is but have you ever used one – especially while under way! You’ve seen the stove on board – have you ever seen it being used or used it yourself? Have you ever had a chance to sleep on a boat? People really do snore….and all those unfamiliar sounds! Have you ever slept on a boat at anchor? The first time you do any of these things you may find yourself feeling a little nervous or awkward.
Club flotillas are meant to be a learning experience – for all levels of skill – from the first time you do something – to the hundredth time you do it. Each time you go on one there is something new to learn – new places to see – new people to meet.
This is your chance to do things you can’t do during regular club hours - to put theory into practice.
Looking forward to seeing you on board!
