Running the Club

 A Member-Run Club

When it comes to planning the Humber Sailing Club calendar of events and managing our day to day activities we rely partially on our members and the time and energy which they contribute to our overall success.

At our Annual General Meeting which is held in October at the end of each sailing season - the members attend to elect the Club Executive and provide input to the planning cycle for the following year. There is also a July Mid-Season Members meeting held to obtain feedback and guidance with respect to the current season and improvements going forward.

 Focused & Action Oriented Committees

Although the Club Executive meets regularly throughout the year to provide a framework and overall plan for the club, which is approved by the Humber College designate, there are 6 essential teams of members that  form committees that take on the actual delivery of all of our progams, namely:

  • Education & Safety (Mentoring, On-Water Clinics, Winter Seminars)
  • Social (Social Events delivery throughout the year)
  • Cruising (Multiday Flotilla Cruises to nearby ports and Supper Cruises)
  • Racing (Running Race Nights and Regattas)
  • Membership (Promoting the Club and Welcoming New Members)
  • Maintenance (Fleet Launch, Fleet Repair, Fleet Haulout)

Now each of these committees consists of a small group of members that delivers their program but not without a significant amount of commitment and participation from everyone in the club at one time or another.

Member Contribution - Club Hours

When you participate in the running the club you are accumulating club hours. Members are required to perform a minimum of 12 hours of Club "work" for the season. The requirement for those who join after May is 3 hours per month for the balance of the season ending in September. (Monthly members are encouraged, but not required to provide club hours)

This work may be Fleet maintenance, Club administration or marketing, organizing Club social activities and events, or assisting the Executive Committee in season planning or preparation. Keep a record of your Club Work hours on-line by clicking "Sailing & Club Hours On-Line under the 'Clubhouse' (members-only) area of this website.

A $250 Club Hours deposit will be pledged from each member at the beginning of each season. Following the Annual Planning meeting in October, Club members with less than the minimum number of required hours will be charged on the basis of $20 for each hour that they are short.

Of course there is absolutely no reason for any member to have to actually pay for their hours with the many club volunteer opportunities that are available. The truth is that it is highly rewarding to, make new friends and obtain higher value and enjoyment from your membership by jumping in and getting involved.
